Nottingham Forest 3-2 Stoke City

Daryl Murphy
Nottingham Forest have now won three successive matches and have only lost once in 12 games this season

Nottingham Forest moved into the last 16 of the Carabao Cup as they held on to beat fellow Championship side Stoke.

Forest took a fortunate lead when Adam Federici tried to collect the ball but it hit Ben Osborn and went in the net.

Daryl Murphy doubled the lead with a powerful shot from 18 yards out and Joe Lolley added a third with a low strike.

But Benik Afobe pulled one back from the edge of the penalty area and Saido Berahino bundled in a second from close range but it was not enough for Stoke.

Forest played the last 13 minutes with 10 men after Diogo Goncalves was shown a straight red card for a high challenge on Tom Edwards.

Berahino had a great chance to take the game into penalties but headed wide from close range in injury time.

Forest, who have won the League Cup on four occasions, most recently reached the last 16 of the tournament in the 2004-05 season.

'We stopped trying to pass the ball' - what they said

Nottingham Forest manager Aitor Karanka said: "I am really pleased and proud of them, especially with the spirit and effort - they were fighting until the end for every single ball.

"We could have scored the fourth and the fifth before they scored their first and finished the game off. But in football you cannot rest. They put their better players on the pitch and played with a real intensity.

"We had chances and if you don't put them away and your opponents have quality players like Tom Ince, Benik Afobe, Bojan [Jokic] and Charlie Adam, then you will have problems."

Stoke City manager Gary Rowett said: "I am really disappointed. For 15-20 minutes we actually looked quite bright, but then we conceded a really poor goal.

"We have control of the ball and we end up dropping it on to the Forest player's knee, he knows nothing about it and lo and behold it ends up in our net. It was tough to take.

"We then showed a lack of courage, we stopped trying to pass the ball and allowed Forest to dictate the play without creating many opportunities. And then we let in another poor goal and in the second half, we concede another bad one.

"We scored a second, hit the bar and missed a sitter, which Saido has to score. Again we could have got something out of the game where we had given ourselves a lot to do."
