Middlesbrough 1-1 Derby County: Jayden Bogle own goal earns Middlesbrough point

Derby County's Jayden Bogle scored a late own goal to deny the Rams a Championship victory at Middlesbrough.

Derby were dominant in the first half, having more than 80% possession in the opening 20 minutes, and deservedly went ahead when George Friend bundled into his own net under pressure from Martyn Waghorn.

Harry Wilson also hit the post with a curling strike as Derby should have been two or three goals up at half-time.

Middlesbrough pushed for an equaliser after the break as the Rams sat back, with Rudy Gestede heading a glorious chance wide before Bogle volleyed past a hapless Scott Carson to earn Boro a point.

The result means the two sides remain two points apart, although the division remains congested with only seven points separating the leaders and 12th position.

Some of Derby's attacking play in the opening 45 minutes was magnificent, with Waghorn, Wilson and Tom Lawrence all outstanding.

Boro simply could not compete with the Rams' sharp, instinctive, one-touch passing - although it was a long-range volley from Wilson which almost put the visitors ahead.

The Wales international latched on to a high looping ball and struck a sweet, dipping left-foot volley from 30 yards which Darren Randolph tipped over.

The chances kept on coming for Derby after Friend's miscue as they piled up almost a dozen shots inside the first half-hour.

It was a much more cagey affair in the second half with Frank Lampard's side looking to protect their lead, but they failed to do the job as Bogle poked the ball into the corner with no one close to him.

Derby did stretch their unbeaten run to five matches, but have now gone seven league games without a clean sheet.

Middlesbrough manager Tony Pulis:

"In the first half we started really, really poorly, really on the back foot. We did some work this week about getting up to the ball and we started on the back foot.

"We got really sloppy and it just gave them the momentum.

"(Goalkeeper Darren) Randolph has kept us in the game and at 1-0 you've always got an opportunity and a chance.

"Second half, the game wasn't as fluid but we ground it out. We worked very, very hard."

Derby County manager Frank Lampard:

"We should have [won] the game in the first half really. We played outstandingly well, the only thing short in our game in the first half was the two or three goals it warranted.

"And the fact is when you are 1-0 up at Middlesbrough, you know it's the most dangerous scoreline because they will go even more direct to try and get back in the game.

"I thought we dealt with that brilliantly too. People were throwing bodies on the line and it was just unfortunate really that it goes in at the end.

"It's a bit of a freak goal. They will say they had some opportunities, but the clear opportunities were ours in the game."
