Former Wrexham goalkeeper Shwan Jalal started his career with Tottenham

Jonathan Smith's late equaliser rescued Chesterfield against promotion-challengers Wrexham, who dropped a place to third.

Brad Walker's first-half penalty after Will Evans handled in the box gave Sam Ricketts' side the chance to return to the top of the National League.

But Martin Allen saw his team battle to the end and earn their reward as Smith struck.

In the process the Spireites rose a place to 19th in the table.

Wrexham manager Sam Ricketts said: "It was disappointing to concede in injury time having been so close to securing what would have been a fantastic three points.

"First half we controlled the game. I was disappointed in our performance second half and ended up defending wave after wave and when you do that eventually one player will switch off and it leads to an opportunity and they will take it."
