Bournemouth 2-1 Norwich: Cherries into Carabao Cup quarter-finals

Bournemouth booked their place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals after edging out Championship side Norwich City.

Junior Stanislas put the Cherries ahead when he cut in from the left and hit an unstoppable right-foot shot.

Norwich improved after the break and equalised when winger Onel Hernandez netted from a tight angle.

But the visitors were level for only two minutes as they failed to clear a corner and Cherries defender Steve Cook hammered home from 12 yards.

It was an entertaining tie but not until the Stanislas goal in the 39th minute did the game burst into life.

There looked to be no danger when the ex-Burnley midfielder picked the ball up on the left, but he mesmerised Canaries skipper Alex Tettey with a couple of stepovers, and his fierce crack at goal gave visiting goalkeeper Michael McGovern no chance.

That also woke Norwich up, as their lone striker Dennis Srbeny was foiled twice before the break - firstly by Artur Boruc, then by the inside of the post with the Polish goalkeeper beaten.

With both sides making eight changes, it was not a surprise that the second half was better, as the teams' fringe players battled to find the fluency which has helped them surge up their respective league tables.

Norwich were good in spells as they chased the game, but veteran Boruc stood in their way when they breached the Cherries' rearguard, saving well from Mario Vranic's free-kick - and only being beaten by that Hernandez goal with 20 minutes left.

It took until the 72nd minute for the Premier League side to win their first corner, but it was from their second a minute later that Cook drove in from near the penalty spot after Marc Pugh's shot had been blocked.

Still Norwich came back at them, and in a frantic seven minutes of stoppage time, unmarked substitute Jordan Rhodes headed wide when well placed.

Cherries boss Eddie Howe will reflect on a job done after guiding his side into the last eight of the competition for only the third time in their history - all coming in the last five seasons. Manchester United await on Saturday.

'A performance we won't want to remember'

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe: "A tough night for us, Norwich played very well. We'd watched them a lot, they're an improving team and on that evidence will take some stopping in the Championship.

"We were below par and rode our luck. We looked disjointed, maybe the players who came in haven't had enough games, but we lacked the sharpness and fluency that's usually there. We're pleased to get through, but it's a performance we won't want to remember.

"We've made this step, we want to go one more. We won, that was the main one. Artur Boruc was good for us in goal, Marc Pugh was his usual consistent self. Simon Francis looks like he's tweaked his groin, we don't know how serious it will be."

Norwich manager Daniel Farke: "First of all, the most important thing is to win. We have to accept the loss today. I'm unbelievably proud of the lads. We dominated the game and had by far the better chances.

"Just one team was playing in the second half. We should have won this game after 90 minutes. I'm disappointed for the players. They really wanted to go through."

Level only for a moment - the best of the stats

  • Bournemouth have reached the League Cup quarter-finals for the second successive season, this after only reaching this stage once in their previous 57 appearances in the competition.
  • Bournemouth have now lost just one of their last 16 EFL Cup matches against lower league opposition, drawing three and winning the other 12, including each of the last five.
  • Norwich have now failed to progress from each of their last five fourth round EFL Cup ties, last reaching the quarter-finals back in the 2012/13 edition of the competition.
  • There were just 99 seconds between Hernandez's equaliser for Norwich and Cook's winner for Bournemouth.
  • Stanislas has scored in each of his last four starts at home for Bournemouth in all competitions, as many goals as in his previous 14 such appearances.
