Luke Young's goal was enough to see Wrexham move up to second in the National League with victory over 10-man Hartlepool at the Racecourse.

Young scored the only goal in the first half, finishing off a strong solo run with a powerful low shot which beat Scott Loach.

Hartlepool were reduced to 10 men five minutes before the interval.

Captain Andrew Davies was shown a straight red card after lashing out at Stuart Beavon.

Despite being a man short, Hartlepool made it far from easy for Wrexham in the second half with Conor Newton denied by Rob Lainton and Ryan Donaldson firing over the crossbar in stoppage time.

But Wrexham maintained their unbeaten home record at the Racecourse and have lost only once in the last 11 league games.

Sam Ricketts' side are level on points with leaders Salford City, who have a better goal difference.

Hartlepool remain ninth in the table.

Wrexham manager Sam Ricketts told BBC Sport Wales:

"I am far from happy with the performance, but delighted with the win.

"It is the worst we have played all season, but we got the three points.

"The fans were agitated tonight which I completely understand, but hopefully if they look at the table tomorrow it will put a little smile on their face."
