David de Gea has won Manchester United's player of the season award for the past four seasons

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is "not confident" goalkeeper David de Gea will sign a new contract - but says he is "not worried" by the situation.

In August, United were positive over the chance of De Gea renewing his deal.

He is committed to Old Trafford until the summer, with the club having an option to extend to 2020.

"If the club want to be better than it is and not worse, obviously it would be very important to keep David," Mourinho told Sky Sports.external-link

De Gea, 27, was named in May as the club's player of the year for an unprecedented fourth time.

Juventus have reportedly targetedexternal-link the Spain international as another low-cost high-quality addition after picking up Liverpool midfielder Emre Can, Barcelona full-back Dani Alves, Bayern Munich midfielder Sami Khedira and Athletic Bilbao striker Fernando Llorente on free transfers in recent years.

De Gea, who joined United from Atletico Madrid in 2011 in an £18.9m deal, is one of several players nearing the end of their deals with the Premier League club.

France forward Anthony Martial, Spanish midfielder Juan Mata and Ecuador wing-back Antonio Valencia are also out of contract at the end of the season.

Mourinho was keen to sign at least one central defender and a winger in the summer, but could not convince the board that his targets would strengthen the squad.

    Unless De Gea is desperate to leave (wouldn't blame him!) Surely Man Utd have to keep him. How many points does he save for them every season? Who do they expect to get as a replacement?

    Left a top club to come to a mediocre one. A one-man defence. Smalling and co must be giving up half their wage to persuade him to stay otherwise it'll be 5 goals a game per opposition. I think he already knows Lindelöf if pretty poor and the others are a joke. When you're best player, who cost a fraction of most of the others, is MVP for four years, it says something about the state of the club.

    Is there no limit to the amount of stupidity that can come from Mourinho's mouth? Not worried! Without De Gea they would have surely finished even further down the table in previous seasons.

    Never thought id say this but De Gea is far too good for Man U. Thats not saying they're terrible, im just saying he deserves to be in the best team in the world or near that level and at the moment that isnt Man U. Can see Juve or similar coming in for him and if he wants to win top trophies they cant stop him leaving.

    So as a 4 time player of the season he surely has the right to walk into woodwards office and demand the same deal that Sanchez is on. If utd don't match it then he is well within his rights to look elsewhere. Utd have created their own problems with the Sanchez fiasco. Also, as utds only truly world class player he holds all the aces. Shame to see him go but understandable

    I'd be surprised if Martial, Mata or Valencia do sign new deals if Mourinho is still in charge based on their experiences with him, but then Luke Shaw did so who knows...

    Including De Gea, potentially £200m worth of players leaving on a free!

    If he leaves, Karius is available for an immediate transfer at a very affordable price.

    Disclaimer: He has had counselling sessions and the recovery is almost complete. The doctor said he still has a mild day dream of that Bale strike that crashed him to the floor but he doesnt fall down in supermarkets anymore whenever the checkout girl throws him a cabbage.

    They are 10th in the Premier League, won't get through last 16 of Champions League, but they are the 'biggest' club in the World.

    Let's be honest, if he was wanting a new contract he'd have done it by now. He's gonna run it down and leave for free. And who can blame him? Stay in Manchester in the europa with Jones and Smalling for protection? Or go to Turin in the champions league behind Bonucci and Chiellini? Easy choice.

    United’s star player for the last four seasons but he has only won one Golden Glove Award.
    Joe Hart won FOUR and is the joint record holder.
    De Gea lacks ambition but it looks like he has at last woken up to the fact that the ship is sinking.
    Who can blame him?
