A Steven Rigg penalty ensured Gateshead ended their six-match winless run with victory against Chesterfield.

Keeping with the form book, the three points had to be ground out in gutsy fashion by the hosts.

Less than 30 minutes in, the Heed went ahead when Will Evans nudged Rigg too forcibly in the box and the latter got up to stick away the resultant penalty kick.

Ben Clark's men could easily have doubled their lead before the break, but Shwan Jalal saved from Rigg and Connor Thomson hit the rebound against a post.
