Wow, so many sad, bitter comments on here. How ironic as a Chelsea fan that the only comment I agree with is 303, a Spurs fan!!VVD has been great this season. Raheem Sterling has been very impressive in many ways for one so young and facing so much mindless crisis but ultimately he deserves this for his performances on the pitch. Which I'm guessing is exactly what he'd want it to be for.
Are we next going to see Men and Women awards for cricket, and other sports that are hugely male-dominated ( eg boxing, golf, rugby ) given equal status by the BBC.Their coverage giving equal reporting/status/importance is ridiculous
@ 314 I kind of agree with you re Hazard he has literally carried the whole team, unfortunately he only seems to do this when Chelsea are at home, he has gone missing in far too many away games to pick up this award
318they stopped my comment for saying the same thing .jest because they are black.
Role model ? we are done , let's stop the promo of this little hide n seek champion and in addition if he does charidee good works ask him to keep the details to himself, sooner or later the little chap will be on BBC news with a cheque bigger than him for a couple of grand .
if Sterling is so good i will be waiting for big clubs to be putting bids in for him!
Political correctness gone mad. Good and improved player, yes. Leadership against racial prejudice, absolutely. But best footballer, not sure about that one. Sterling have certainly improved over the last couple of years since his move from Liverpool. But he still misses too many chances which come his way.Virgil Van Dijk have absolutely dominated in his position over the year.
308... still can't hack Liverpool being a stepping stone club?
Let's not beat about the Bush truth is hegot the awards for his stance against racism and the colour of his skin..FACT...
@308, yes I think he has developed more under Pep than he would have done under Rodgers and Klopp, but that is my opinion. Obviously Liverpool fans won't agree but as a neutral I am not biased or bitter
Why is the BBC starting to 'bundle' women's football news into articles about men's football? In order to claim 'increased interest' in the female game as a precursor to spending our license fee on buying the rights to it? Record attendance for a women's game is 5,265. Please, put it in a different section and stop ramming it down our throats. Sterling award smacks of guilt ridden journos.
As for womens' football; I don't mind them playing but why all the publicity for a sub-standard product? I wrote to the BBC asking for equality and to show mens' netball. They said it was just a minority sport .. so what is womens' football? And it was even more of a minority before the BBC started pushing it. Equality for all - yes ... but the publicity is sexist and just because they are female.
I'm a neutral football fan. I Just like to see a good quality game, whoever is playing.Of every match I've watched this season, Eden Hazard has stood head-and-shoulders above any other player. This an odd decision, with undercurrents of obligation by sympathy ??
Sterling is the most over-rated footballer in the Premier League. Yes, he can run fast, but he has only got one foot, dives regularly, and he scores nearly all his goals from two yards out with his right foot once his wonderful team-mates have done all the hard work for him. How can he possibly be placed ahead of Van Dijk, Aguero, Hazard, Bernardo Silva, Mane in any football poll?
Well done to both of them.
308. If he moved to win the UCL he is no worse off than if he had stayed. If he moved to win the EPL he is much better off.
