Hull City 1-3 Bristol City: Benik Afobe scores twice to give Robins victory

Benik Afobe
Bristol City's victory at Hull City was their second away win in the space of five days

Benik Afobe scored twice as Bristol City earned a third successive Championship win with victory at Hull City.

The Robins, unbeaten since the opening weekend of the season, went ahead through Afobe's penalty after a foul on Tommy Rowe.

Visiting striker Famara Diedhiou then struck the underside of the crossbar with a far-post header, only for Jarrod Bowen to superbly slot home moments later to make it 1-1.

Bristol City restored their lead when Reece Burke diverted Jack Hunt's low cross into his own net, before substitute Hunt then teed up Afobe in almost identical fashion to make the game safe.

Afobe, on a season-long loan deal from Stoke City, again led the line expertly for Lee Johnson's side and has now scored three times in three matches.

But it was not all good news for the away side, who had club record signing Tomas Kalas stretchered off with what looked to be a hamstring injury in the first half.

With the ex-Chelsea centre-half off the pitch, Hull were guilty of missing numerous chances during an open second period, finding City goalkeeper Daniel Bentley in fine form.

The former Brentford man twice denied Kamil Grosicki with smart saves at his near post, while Tom Eaves struck an attempt straight into his arms when well placed inside the box.

Grosicki also grazed the outside of the post with a low shot from distance - and the Tigers were made to pay for their wastefulness in front of goal when City struck twice in three minutes.

Wing-back Hunt set up both goals with low crosses from the right, the first a teasing ball that Burke could only poke past his own goalkeeper and the second put on a plate for Afobe to slot in.

Hull City boss Grant McCann told BBC Radio Humberside:

"We won't be changing the system, we will stay with what we do. We have to be better, it's as simple as that. For us as coaching staff we need to make sure we work harder with the system, the system will work for us.

"The first one's an own goal, we didn't recover quick enough and put ourselves in a position where all you can do is put a leg on it.

"We know we could have done better on the left hand side with the other two goals. But we also, as a team, need to defend better."

Bristol City manager Lee Johnson told BBC Radio Bristol:

"At half-time I was pleased to go in 1-1 because I believed that the quality of our substitutes would make a difference and when it became a basketball match at the end, we had the energy and youth to break.

"Benik Afobe seems to be enjoying his football and has made a good connection with Kasey Palmer. He's looked like a really good signing for us.

"It's a huge win as they have some top players. I was really proud of how they won the game and more importantly, how they saw it out."
