Reading 2-1 Milwall: Jordan Obita & Sam Baldock give Royals victory

Millwall keeper Bartosz Bialkowski punches the ball clear amid one of many spells of Reading pressure

Two superb first-half strikes from Jordan Obita and Sam Baldock were enough to give Reading victory over Millwall.

Obita scored the Royals' first from 25 yards after the ball bounced kindly to the full-back to smash past Lions keeper Bartosz Bialkowski.

John Swift hit the crossbar from a free-kick as Reading dominated the first half, with Baldock's powerful strike high into the net from the edge of the box doubling the hosts' lead shortly before the interval.

Jed Wallace clawed one back for Gary Rowett's side after the winger nutmegged a defender and beat another to score, but the Lions were unable to complete a comeback at the Madejski Stadium.

Millwall had chances to equalise as the south-east London club enjoyed their best spell of the game in the second half.

But the Lions failed to find the net with their best chance falling to former Reading striker Jon Dadi Bodvarsson, who smashed an overheard kick inches past the post.

Both Rowett and Mark Bowen were unbeaten with their new clubs but Obita and Baldock gave the Reading boss a second victory in three games and moved the Royals up to 19th in the Championship.

The defeat for Millwall means the Lions slip to 17th and continued their winless run away from home in the league since March.

Reading manager Mark Bowen told BBC Radio Berkshire:

"I'm delighted. Jordan Obita has had two years of hell (injured), the days of working on his own in the gym...I am delighted for him.

"The same goes for Sam (Baldock). He reminded everyone today he has got quality.

"This was the first game I said we were expected to win. I expected us to dominate the game and I think we did.

"I look back and I think that will stand us in good stead, We showed a lot of character."

Millwall manager Gary Rowett told BBC Radio London:

"It was a game of two halves.

"Our reaction in the second half was very positive, we were on the front foot.

"We were very aggressive and we were probably the opposite first half, which was a little bit disappointing, because the aim today was to come with the same mentality as at home and to test the players to see if we could do that.

"In a lot of away games this season we lacked that little bit of belief to step forward and take a risk, so there's a lot to learn, a lot to take on board.

"But I was very pleased with our reaction in the second half, I felt we deserved something out of the game second half, but the first half we were poor and second best."
