Preston North End 3-1 Huddersfield Town: Promotion hopefuls end Terriers' unbeaten run

High-flying Preston North End ended Huddersfield Town's seven-match unbeaten run with a comfortable home win at Deepdale.

Jayden Stockley headed his first goal of the season when he reacted quickest to a free-kick by Paul Gallagher which came back off the post.

Alan Browne doubled the lead before Gallagher sealed the victory after the break by converting from the spot - the eighth penalty scored by Preston this season - after a hand ball by Terence Kongolo.

Juninho Bacuna toe-poked one back for Huddersfield after running from halfway, the Terriers' first shot on target, but it was no more than a consolation.

Victory kept the home side - who were without suspended Ben Pearson - second in the table, two points behind leaders West Bromwich Albion, while Huddersfield slipped one place to 19th.

Danny Cowley's side went into the game having collected 14 points since the beginning of October, more than any other side in the Championship.

But they never looked like ending a dismal winless run in league games at Preston stretching back to 1969 after Stockley had put the Lilywhites ahead.

His goal was his first since a 3-3 draw against Sheffield Wednesday in April, coincidentally also the last game in which Browne had found the net for Preston, and the midfielder ended his own barren run from Tom Barkhuizen's cross.

Huddersfield boss Cowley was shown a yellow card for delaying a restart, but he was unable to conjure up a comeback from his team after Gallagher's goal put the game out of their reach.

Bacuna carried their main threat in the second half and after pulling one back, fired just wide in the closing stages from Alex Pritchard's pass, but a second was arguably more than they deserved.

Preston manager Alex Neil:

"I cannot have much to complain about now. We are getting results and performing well.

"It was important to go in at half-time in front and, based on the chances we created, we deserved that.

"We knew we would have to change something in our approach, as we were missing two important players, but the team reacted well and showed they can adapt in these situations.

"The important thing now in the coming weeks is to keep the momentum going. The players can be very proud of the run that we are on right now."

Huddersfield boss Danny Cowley:

"Of course a result like this is difficult to take, but I simply do not think we started well enough, and that hampered us.

"We do have to praise Preston. They worked hard right from the start and played with a real intensity. We struggled to cope with them in the first half.

"We do not look for excuses in these situations. We have to look at ourselves now and look ahead to the next few games we have coming up.

"The travelling fans were fantastic, but we let ourselves down with the performance. We came up short and we need to look at that together."
