Montreal Impact have signed Kenya midfielder Victor Wanyama from Tottenham on a free transfer.

Wanyama, 28, has made just four appearances for Spurs this season, with his only start coming in the Carabao Cup loss at Colchester United.

"We wish Victor well for the future," the Premier League club said.

Impact, managed by Arsenal great Thierry Henry, beat New Engand Revolution in their opening game of the Major League Soccer season on Saturday.

The Canadian club finished ninth in the Eastern Conference in the 2019 campaign, well short of the play-offs.

Wanyama became a key player for Spurs after arriving from Southampton in June 2016, making 47 appearances in all competitions as Mauricio Pochettino's side finished second in the Premier League behind Chelsea that season.

But a knee cartilage injury at the start of the following campaign, and more knee issues in 2018-19, derailed his Spurs career and limited him to just 24 more starts.

Spurs agreed a £13.6m deal with Belgian side Club Bruges for Wanyama in August, but the move collapsed before the transfer deadline.

"I'm looking forward to bringing further awareness to this team, city and league across Africa," said Wanyama, who has signed a three-year deal with the Canadian club.

"When I spoke to Thierry and he told me he wanted me to join him in Montreal, I didn't have to think twice."

A great defensive midfielder at his best who has been plagued with a series of injuries for some time now. Good luck Victor, I hope you overcome the injuries and recover your form at Montreal.

Incredible to think that he was almost sold for £13M just last summer and now goes for nothing.

Always feel like he did a solid job for us when he did actually start and with our form looking a bit off, perhaps should of kept him until the end of season. Anyway, good luck to him!

Sad to see him go as he was awesome in his first season.

Just hasn’t been able to get up to PL fitness levels after the knee injury. Not sure why but best of luck in the MLS.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see him return to a lower PL team in 12 months if he recovers some form over there.

Agree with all those positive comments about Wanyama.. when he first came to Spurs he had a feel of Yaya Toure at his best - before injuries hammered him... wish him well

We could have got around £10m for him 6 months ago. Now he goes on a free. Sums Levy up perfectly.

It's courtesy to thank a player when he leaves, and I do wish him well as you would anyone, even downtools Eriksen, just wish we'd got rid of the pair of em sooner. Wanyama gave us one season and the screamer v Liverpool, in all honesty that's terrible for £65k a week for 3/4yrs. He earnt more than Dier, Davies, Rose and Winks can you believe. Frees up wages for someone who's fit.

His partnership with Dembele was a huge influence in Spurs 16/17 season, shame he was unable to reproduce this form.
