Coventry City 0-0 Wycombe: Strugglers play out stalemate at St Andrew's

Gustavo Hamer holds his head in his hands after he missed a chance to put Coventry ahead
Gustavo Hamer had a chance to give Coventry the lead against bottom side Wycombe

Coventry missed the chance to ease their relegation fears as they fought out a scoreless draw against bottom side Wycombe.

The Sky Blues enjoyed the better of a tepid game, but they were unable to find a way past goalkeeper David Stockdale.

Wycombe might even have snatched their third away victory of the season late on when substitute Fred Onyedinma was denied by Ben Wilson.

Coventry stay 20th, four points above the bottom three, while Wycombe are 11 points adrift of safety.

Mark Robins' side created the better opportunities from the start, yet they failed to apply the finishing touch.

Gustavo Hamer steered Fankaty Dabo's cross wide within the opening minute, and Maxime Biamou should have put the Sky Blues ahead soon after, pouncing on a defensive slip only to be denied by Stockdale.

Biamou shanked another effort off target after latching on to Sam McCallum's through ball, but City faded as the game progressed.

The Chairboys, who had lost their past three away games and their previous six league meetings with Coventry, might have collected all three points, but Onyedinma's effort, six minutes from time, was kept out by the diving Wilson.

Coventry manager Mark Robins told BBC CWR:

"We probably created more in this game than we've done in any other game against them and not taken one, so that's the frustration. We could have been three or four up in the first half.

"They're a team that put you under huge pressure physically and have moments in games that can put you on the back foot. If you take one of your chances it relieves the pressure on everybody and you go on and win that game comfortably.

"It's a point towards the total, so it's not all doom and gloom, that's for sure.

"We've got to continue to be brave and scrap but also be more determined in the final third because it fizzled out from time to time. There was a lack of quality with the final move."

Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth told BBC Three Counties Radio:

"Of course we need a win and we went for it towards the end. In the beginning I thought Coventry were dominating and we had to change it at half-time to make sure we got more into the game.

"It worked - Hamer was their star and he went very quiet for them. Curtis Thompson got on him and stopped him playing and then we started creating chances ourselves.

"I thought we were going to nick it, I really did. We just lacked a tiny bit of quality in some key areas.

"The positives are we've kept a clean sheet away from home and got a point. I'm proud of the boys as always - they've given me their best, that's all I can ever ask for and sometimes your best doesn't quite get you over the line."
