Queens Park Rangers 3-0 Coventry City: Rangers coast to win over Sky Blues

Chris Willock (centre) celebrates his early goal against Coventry
Chris Willock's early goal was just his second in 30 league games this season

Queens Park Rangers coasted to their biggest win of the season as they beat struggling Coventry City at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium.

Chris Willock headed Rangers in front inside the second minute before Michael Rose's own goal made it 2-0.

Coventry's Marko Marosi prevented a complete rout with numerous saves, but was finally beaten again when Ilias Chair's shot squirmed through his hands.

QPR remain in 12th place, while the Sky Blues stay 20th, four points above the bottom three.

Rangers raced out of the traps, with Chair and Lee Wallace combining on the left to set up Willock for a header that crashed in off the post to give the home side the lead.

Marosi, returning after a seven-week absence, initially prevented further damage as he kept out Charlie Austin's header and also foiled Chair from a tight angle.

The Sky Blues' keeper was beaten again in the 22nd minute, however, when Chair's floated corner was met by the head of Rose and sailed over him into the net.

Chair should have put the contest to bed when Stefan Johansen played him through, only to be denied by Marosi in a one-on-one situation.

But the Moroccan playmaker finally added his name to the scoresheet midway through the second half, producing an incisive solo run and firing past Marosi at his near post.

QPR substitutes George Thomas and Albert Adomah might have made it four, with the pair both forcing further stops from the overworked Marosi.

Coventry - who have now lost six of their last eight away games - almost reduced the deficit late on when Viktor Gyokeres went close with a free-kick.

QPR manager Mark Warburton told BBC London:

"Overall it was a really good performance - we were dominant for long periods and the early goal, of course, always helps.

"For the first half-hour, we moved the ball well and played with pace and purpose, but we've got to be more ruthless.

"We had numerous chances and could have been four or five-up at half-time. When you're dominating teams for certain periods, make sure you maximise it.

"Clean sheets are vitally important for us defensively, but getting those early goals relieves the pressure and allows us to play."

Coventry boss Mark Robins told BBC Coventry & Warwickshire:

"Home and away, we're chalk and cheese - it's just ridiculous. You're wanting the players to be aggressive in their mindsets, to make challenges and get all over them, but they did that to us.

"While I want to say we're going to have a go at teams, when they're better than you at stages in games that makes it very difficult.

"Anybody can start to play at 3-0 down, it's very easy. It feels like it's a comfort blanket, to be goals down away from home.

"Whilst it's disappointing, we can't stay disappointed. We've got to get that out of our system and be ready to go for the next eight games."
