Caterham chief designer Mike Gascoyne has been promoted to chief technical officer of the Norfolk-based group.

His promotion means an increased role within the F1 outfit for technical director Mark Smith, who takes over the day-to-day running of the team.

Gascoyne, 48, has been a member of the former Lotus Racing team since 2009.

"We are all delighted that Mike has taken up the challenge we have presented him," said Caterham Group chairman Tony Fernandes.

"I know Mike is excited about what lies ahead."

"This is a very proud moment for me," said Gascoyne, who will continue to attend races in the forthcoming season.

"Mark Smith is exactly the right person to step up to the broader role he will now be taking on in the F1 team."
