I feel sorry for the people that got turned away. But, I drove 100 mls from Essex to arrive at silverstone woodlands campsite at 6am on Friday. Silverstone sent lots of advice by email each day leading up to 6th which I took heed of. I can't see how they could've done any more. My car was a mile from my tent, because I wasn't allowed to drive to the pitch. I completely understood why. Lots of MUD
Travel 90 miles there each day - Friday took longer than normal to get in spent over 1 hour in a queue while getting out was also a problem.Saturday was great sailed in and no queues at all to get home, left grandstand at 6 and back home just 2hours later,Race day always busy but quickest for years getting in , stewards organised things well on our grass car park. - just get there early
Went park and ride as instructed after problems with car on Friday only to leave bus and walk in due to bus stuck on A43 along with all the cars why was there no bus lane sorry Silverstone bad organisation.
We spent 5 hrs to get there on Friday, eventually parking just after 1pm (we only live about 35 miles away). The stewards were completely unhelpful. As a suggestion, why can't Silverstone join forces with Towcester Racecourse for the GP weekend, and run a park and ride service from there? This would save on spending money on hard standing car parking, something which already exists at Towcester
John, I dare you to run that by the farmers who own the land. And I'm sure Bernie won't want to take even more money off the track in the future, while demanding that the ticket price be held down to keep the fans coming..You still haven't actually answered the logistics and costs, just thrown in "borrow the cadets/TA". @Josh, so, 2 months rain is Silverstone's fault? Got it.
Sibbwolf, I cannot remember the last time I sat at Silverstone GP in really warm, dry conditions. This is Britain and nothing is certain about the weather. Its all about working with the neighbours and building relationships. The plastic hard standing could be done by the TA or Royal Engineers cadets. They make an exercise out of it.And Silverstone take £50 for car parking. We pay enough.
The fact of the matter is this...... Maybe next year, take Thursday off work and go to Silverstone earlier.
I sat in traffic inside Silverstone for 4 hours. The simple fact is the lack of car parking stewards and staff NOT the roads and car parks. They were told to remove fluorescent uniforms as they were getting so much grief. This isn't surprising as they knew absolutely 'nothing' about the situation. No communication with fans what so ever! SIlverstone staff are 100% to blame, not the weather.
"Vagaries" does not mean "A months, or more, rain in 2 days", john. They have to make decisions that are economical, and the logistics of trying to get that amount of temporary roads/hard standing in, assuming they even get the permission of the land-owners, would not be justified for 3 days a year - not to mention putting your ticket price up even more!
Next, you dont need to tarmac fields. Temp roads and hard standing can be obtained from army/plant hire companies.Get stewards that dont hide from the public when it goes wrong.Park and Ride is fine if you are local. I am from Edinburgh and with hotels charging stupid prices locally I have no choice but to drive. No locals where I was parked Sat/Sun. I had a car parked on my roof though!
All the arguments re transport to Silverstone. First of all they have been doing this long enough now to know the vagaries of the British summer. They should be forward planning to cater for extreme weather and have standby car parks and campsites available. Show me a farmer/landowner who wont accept a £1000 retainer to use a field in an emergency with further payments if necessary.
Friday - drove 150 miles towing a caravan to pre-booked camping on the Woodlands camp-site (official Sliverstone camping ) queued for 8 hr to be turned away from a site I have already paid for!!! We were instructed via Silverstone radio to "Go Home".Apparently it was for my "health and safety" so after about 11 hours in the car I'm to "safely" drive another 150 miles. They should loose the GP.
