"Not only is he better than Lauda, Alonso, Hakkinen, Hamilton and Gilles Villeneuve, he's a match for Senna?"Of all the drivers in F1 at present, the one who most resembles Senna is Vettel. Check out their respective records if you don't believe it. Senna was the ultimate "qualify fast and lead from the front" driver. He started on pole in an incredible 40% of his races.
I've been reading this top 20 with great interest. I respect that it was compiled at the start of the year after Vettels dominant 2011 campaign but to put Vettel in 8th place is ridiculous! Almost his whole career in the best car he should have won as many races as he has. Overatted at #8 by some margin. Alonso, Hamilton definetly better given the given the same machinery.
This list is a waste of time, with car & setup it's so difficult to tell.Apart from stuff like;every1 is saying on average Mclaren have the best car.But had 2 driver averaging the same quali and race pace as Button, everyone would have said it was the 4th fastest car.Conciding so may more people try racing now its likely it is like some of these old driver would be really very average.
"only one of Vettel's wins has not come from the front row of the grid. And for the one that did, he started third."Lewis Hamilton has never won a race from further back than second row on the grid. Has started on front row in 42% of races.Ayrton Senna won the vast majority of his races from the first two rows of the grid. Started on front row in 53% of races.
The decision to include current drivers on the list of the "greatest drivers" is bound to be controversial. That said, once the decision is made, it seems obvious that Vettel ranks above Hamilton or Alonso, by virtue of his greater success at a younger age.
This top 20 is total rubbish.
Better than Hamilton? Yeah ok. Better than Brabham? Ok yeah can have that. Better than Piquet? Well yeah, though Piquet did get out the car and punch someone. Better than anyone else so far? God no! Having a laugh there. He might well be the best, but in 10 more years. If Lauda is reading this, he's probably not bothered, but should be! Beaten by someone who hasn't done it all yet.
"Like Jim Clark and Alberto Ascari before him, Vettel is most comfortable leading from the front. Put him on pole position in a competitive car, give him a lead into the first corner and Vettel is close to unbeatable. "Like Ayrton Senna and Lewis Hamilton as well. Both Hamilton and Senna built their success on fast qualifying in competitive (or even dominant) cars.
"In the case of this one, which has no pretences to be definitive" yeah right - that's a bit thin. Andrew Benson does his best to impress and prove how Vettel can be the 8th greatest of all times, but it does not really click. Amazing to put him ahead of three times WDCs like Piquet, Brabham and Lauda as well as ahead of Alonso - it is not conclusive yet how Seb is really "greater" than Fernando.
I agree LexP, good point, in 2010 he had the dominant car and only scraped through. He is also driving for red bull that push the boundaries of legality - and seem to get a lot of decisions go their way (2012 being the exception). Another question to ask why does Alonso not seem to care about the rumour of him going to Ferrari? A: He knows he is better than him and will beat him..good luck Vettel!
Vettel Great!?!? Great is doing something amazing...Hamilton almost winning in his debut season and beating a double world champ (team mate) in the processAlonso putting Schumacher into his 1st retirement and doing great things with limited machineary this yearVettel? Sneak the 2010 title in the last race and sweep to title in a dominant car..Button did too in 2009 but is he in the top 20..?!
No no no - I'm sorry but Sebastian Vettel does not belong to be up in 8th! Ahead of Alonso???! Granted he has won 2 world championships but in a very dominant car. Put him in the same car as Button, Alonso, Hamilton and Raikkonen and I would suspect he would come 4th or 5th. I'm sorry but, although good, he is not great.Cui Bono this is F1's greatest drivers
How can Vettel be ranked above Alonso and Hamilton? Vettel has had the fastest car for most of the 5 years and never had a superior teammate to race against. Hamilton showed his mettle in his first year by racing on par with Alonso as teammate (Alonso destroyed all his other teammates; ie: look at Massa). And everyone agrees Alonso is the best of the current drivers.
I wonder if the BBC actually read the comments on here!
