Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone says he has "done a deal" with Pirelli to continue as the sport's tyre supplier until 2019.

The 84-year-old shook hands with Pirelli's Marco Tronchetti Provera live on BBC One as he made the announcement.

A spokesman confirmed the commercial deal between F1 and Pirelli was done - the Italian company beating Michelin to the 2017-19 contract.

The deal still has to be confirmed by F1's governing body the FIA.
