Formula 1 team boss Sir Frank Williams is recovering in hospital after a bout of pneumonia.

The Williams team's chief executive, Mike O'Driscoll, said the 74-year-old, who is paralysed from the shoulders down, had been taken ill in September.

"He's had a tough time. He's contracted pneumonia. He is making a slow and steady recovery," O'Driscoll said.

"We hope to see him back at Grove [Williams' base] very soon. We all know how determined he is."

Sir Frank has been in a wheelchair since breaking his spine in a car accident in France in 1986.

Williams was also taken to hospital two years ago because of a pressure sore on his back. He made a full recovery.

Williams are due to announce their 2017 driver line-up on Thursday.

They have re-signed the Finn Valtteri Bottas and will partner him with the Canadian rookie Lance Stroll.
