Irish interest in the British Amateur Open at Royal Portrush ended on Friday with Stephanie Meadow's defeat by Kim Williams.

The Royal Portrush player lost 4&3 to the South African in the third round.

Meadow, who is having a superb collegiate career in the US, defeated Spain's Camilla Hedberg at the 19th in the previous round.

Lisa and Leona Maguire exited in the first round along with Royal County Down's Danielle McVeigh.

The Maguire twins suffered one-hole defeats while McVeigh lost by two holes against England's Lauren Taylor.

The trio were all part of last year's Great Britain & Ireland side which faced the USA in the Curtis Cup.

Bangor's Victoria Bradshaw lost 2&1 to German Thea Hoffmeister in round two.

Meadow is currently the leading British and Irish player in the world amateur rankings in 13th place - helped by her recent victory in the NCAA East Regional Championship.
