Former world number one Tiger Woods will return to action at next week's Bridgestone Invitational in Ohio.

The 35-year-old American has not played competitively since pulling out of the Players Championship in May because of knee and Achilles injuries.

"I'm excited to get back out there," Woods said on his websiteexternal-link.

Woods has also formally entered the PGA Championship, the final major of the year, which will be played from August 11-14 at Atlanta Athletic Club.

The 14-time major winner - who has slipped to number 21 in the rankings - recently split with long-time caddie Steve Williams and is yet to announce a replacement.

Woods has not won a major since the 2008 US Open, nor any tournament worldwide since 2009.

He pulled out of this year's US Open at Congressional and the Open at Royal St George's.
