Ballyclare golfer Gareth Maybin has lost ground at the Italian Open in Turin as a second round of one-over-par 73 left him 11 shots off the lead.

Maybin posted three birdies and four bogeys and lies four under as he continues to try and boost his hopes of retaining his European Tour card.

Darren Clarke is two under following rounds of 72 and 70.

South African Hennie Otto leads on 15 under, three shots clear of Bernd Wiesberger from Austria.

England's Ross Fisher is third on nine under, but a number of Irish players are set to miss the cut.

Paul McGinley and Simon Thornton ended beyond the cut mark one one over, with Peter Lawrie and Padraig Harrington four over and David Higgins five over.

Damien McGrane joins Clarke on two under ahead of the weekend's action.
