Five-time major winner Phil Mickelson and world number five Justin Rose were among those to miss the cut in the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.
After Tiger Woods withdrew on day one, Mickelson carded a 72 to close two over par and miss his second successive cut.
Rose shot a 70 but his level par total, matched by former world number one Luke Donald who had a 75, was one too many.
American Harris English leads by two at 10 under, Scot Martin Laird shares second, while Ian Poulter is six under.
Mickelson, down to 18 in the world rankings, matched three birdies with three bogeys on the North course in his native San Diego, having dropped four shots at the more difficult South course the day before.
It is the first time since 2002 that the 44-year-old has missed consecutive cuts on the PGA Tour and he described his putting as "beyond pathetic".
Dustin Johnson, in his first tournament since July following personal issues, had three birdies in a 70 but missed the cut by a single shot.
Others who failed to qualify for the weekend included world number nine Jordan Spieth, who dropped four strokes in seven holes in his 75, and three-time major winner Padraig Harrington, who had seven bogeys and a double bogey in his 79.
English, 25, who won his two PGA Tour events to date in 2013, had three birdies on each nine in a 66 on the North course.
Poulter had five birdies and an eagle in an opening round 67 at the North course but mixed three birdies with two dropped shots in a 71 on the South to drop into a share of sixth place.
