Ian Poulter lies three shots off the lead going into the final round of the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.

The Englishman, 39, shot a level-par 72 in San Diego to remain in contention in his first tournament for two months.

"I have a chance tomorrow in my first tournament back and that's very exciting," Poulter said.

United States players J.B. Holmes, who shot a four-under 68, and overnight leader Harris English (73) share the third-round lead on nine under.

Fellow Americans Lucas Glover, Jimmy Walker, Spencer Levin, Chad Campbell and Nick Watney are a shot further back on eight under.

World number 32 Poulter, the leading European, is in a tie for 13th.

"I've taken eight weeks off to work on my game and not played many rounds in that time," he said. "It's nice I am playing well and putting well."

Poulter has not won a tournament since claiming victory in the WGC-HSBC Champions event in Shenzhen, China in 2012.
