Darren Clarke showed an improvement in form as he posted a second round of four-under-par 68 to lie seven shots off the lead at the Africa Open.

The European Ryder Cup captain carded six birdies, including four in his first five holes, plus two bogeys, and is tied for 24th place on four under.

England's Matt Ford leads on 11 under, with Eduardo De La Riva one behind.

Michael Hoey was three shots adrift of the cut mark as a 69 on Friday saw him end two over in joint 107th position.

The Belfast player had fired a disappointing 77 in his opening 18 holes.

Ireland's Kevin Phelan led after the first round but a 72 left him tied for 14th on five under.

Damien McGrane is two under following a 70, while Peter Lawrie was well short of making the cut on eight over.
