Rory McIlroy is 10 shots off the lead after a frustrating 72 in the third round of the WGC-Cadillac Championship.
McIlroy hit more problems at the eighth - but this time managed to control his temper at the hole where he had thrown his three iron into a lake on Friday.
The world number one made a good start on Saturday, but then dropped shots to card a level-par round.
American JB Holmes holds a five-shot lead over Dustin Johnson and double Masters champion Bubba Watson.
Ireland's Shane Lowry is alongside McIlroy on one under par and will partner 2013 Masters champion Adam Scott in the final round.
McIlroy had been quick to apologise for his behaviour during Friday's round which ended with him signing for a two-under 70.
His discarded club was later shown on television being recovered from the water by a diver.
McIlroy's third round got off to a good start with birdies on the third and seventh to move three under par and just five off the lead.
But the Northern Irishman's drive on the eighth finished behind a tree and the four-time major winner was lucky to see his third shot stop inches short of finding the water once more.
The 25-year-old was unable to take advantage of his good fortune and followed a bogey there with another on the ninth, with further dropped shots on the 13th and 14th coming after a birdie on the 11th.
Graeme McDowell had a 75 in the third round and is five over par for the tournament.
