Maguire exits from British Amateur but Mehaffey makes semi-finals

World number one amateur female golfer Leona Maguire and Paula Grant bowed out of the Ladies' British Open Amateur Championship but Olivia Mehaffey has made the semi-finals at Portstewart.

Leading qualifier Maguire, 20, was beaten 3&1 by Australian Joanna Charlton despite not recording a bogey.

Charlton had already beaten Maguire's twin sister Lisa in the first round.

Royal County Down's Mehaffey, 17, beat Swedish player Madeline Sagstrom and Canada's Maddie Szeryk on Friday.

Mehaffey beat Sagstrom by two holes in her morning last-16 match before edging out Szeryk by one hole in the quarter-finals.

The Northern Irish youngster will face Sweden's Linnea Strom in Saturday's first semi-final with France's Celine Boutier taking on Belgium's Charlotte De Corte in the second semi-final.

Strom defeated Leona Maguire's morning conqueror Charlton 2&1 in the afternoon last-eight game.

Lisburn player Grant defeated Sweden's Elin Esborn at the 19th on Friday morning but was beaten 3&2 by Belgian De Corte in the afternoon.
