Jordan Spieth admitted to feeling rusty in his warm-up for next week's Open Championship at St Andrews.
The world number two, 21, shot a level-par 71 to finish eight shots off the pace after the first round of the John Deere Classic in Illinois.
"Just a rusty round," he said. "It's a little disappointing but at the same time I didn't put in the preparation."
Americans Justin Thomas and Nicholas Thompson lead the field and Spieth may have to shoot a score in the region of four-under for his second round to make the cut and get in two more competitive rounds before the Open.
Spieth will be pursuing the third leg of golf's Grand Slam - winning all four majors in one season - a feat as yet unachieved in the modern era.
But his task in Scotland is at least simplified by the absence of world number one Rory McIlroy, after the Northern Irishman withdrew from the defence of his title with an ankle injury sustained playing football.
