Graeme McDowell bogeyed the final three holes to card an opening one-over-par 73 in the US PGA at Whistling Straits.

The former US Open winner from Portrush birdied the 15th to go two under before his poor finish, which leaves him seven behind leader Dustin Johnson.

Darren Clarke struggled to a 78, with a double-bogey at the fourth to go with six bogeys and two birdies.

Two-times US PGA winner Padraig Harrington posted a 76 while Shane Lowry lies six over.

It was a disappointing day for Lowry, who was tipped to contend in the year's fourth and final major after his Bridgestone Invitational success last week.

World number Rory McIlroy was the best of the Irish contingent, the defending champion shooting 71 on his return from an ankle injury.

American Johnson holds a one-shot lead over Sweden's David Lingmerth in Wisconsin.
