Thorbjorn Olesen scored a seven-under-par 65 to open up a three-stroke lead after the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship's penultimate round.
The Dane, 25, shot eight birdies at St Andrews to lead German Florian Fritsch.
Joint overnight leader Jimmy Mullen of England, who is making his professional debut at 21, dropped eight shots off the lead with a 74 at Carnoustie.
"It feels great. I holed some great putts today, that was the key," Olesen, who is 17 under par, told BBC Sport.
"It's a nice position to be in but I know it won't be easy tomorrow. I am definitely trying to win but it's going to be a battle."
The Alfred Dunhill tournament, which concludes on Sunday, sees fourballs made up of two professionals and two amateur players alternate between links courses at Kingsbarns, Carnoustie and the Old Course, St Andrews.
Frenchman Benjamin Hebert is third, four shots behind Olesen, while Welshman Bradley Dredge is one of four tied on 12 under.
England's Graeme Storm and Wales's Jamie Donaldson are part of a six-man group one shot further back, with Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell 10 under.
