Scotland's Stephen Gallacher posted a flawless 66 in the third round of the Maybank Championship in Kuala Lumpur.
The 41-year-old recorded five birdies to finish six shots behind leader Soomin Lee of Korea, who shot a 64 in Malaysia.
"I needed to push on because I was a fair way back. I'm happy I've put myself in contention," Gallacher said.
England's Richard Bland is also nine under after a third-round 73 caused him to lose ground.
A similar fate befell compatriot and world number 13 Danny Willett, who is now nine adrift after also shooting a two-over round.
Korea's Lee carded nine birdies to open up a three-shot lead, having started the day five shots behind overnight leader Nathan Holman.
The Australian now sits third, one behind countryman Marcus Fraser (66), after posting a triple bogey at the 18th.
