Bradley Dredge says he can improve at the USPGA Championship, despite challenging the early leaders.

Dredge, who has risen from 888 to 99 in the world rankings, is making his first appearance in a major since 2010.

The former World Cup winner fired a one-under-par first round of 69 at Baltusrol, as did fellow Welshman Jamie Donaldson.

"I am pleased with the scoring, one under is a good score and I didn't play my best golf," Dredge told BBC Sport.

"I rattled a few putts in, made a few mistakes, but I am pleased with one under.

"It was really nice to be back out there, but there is room for improvement over the next few days."

The 43-year-old has climbed back into the world's top 100 four years after losing his European Tour card.

Donaldson made consecutive birdies on the 17th and 18th to break par.
