Irish amateur Leona Maguire opened her Women's British Open challenge at Woburn with a solid one-under-par 71.

The 21-year-old Curtis Cup star had her only dropped shot on the third but picked up two birdies before the turn and had pars on the entire back nine.

Maguire, at university in California, is nine shots behind South Korean Mirim Lee whose stunning 62 was the lowest round in the tournament's history.

Olivia Mehaffey will struggle to make the cut after an opening 75.

Mehaffey, the 17-year-old Irish amateur champion from Royal County Down, had a bogey on the opening hole but birdied the third and was on level par at the turn.

She dropped three shots on the way back to be three over par for the day.

Maguire, who along with Mehaffey helped Great Britain and Ireland regain the Curtis Cup Dun Laoghaire in June, will be pleased with her showing which left her just one shot behind world number one Hannah O'Sullivan of the United States.
