Ireland's women suffered their second 3-0 defeat in as many days at the European Championships as they were beaten by lower-ranked nation Belgium.

Two Charlotte de Vos goals put the Belgians in control as Cliodhna Sargent went close for the Irish who bossed possession for long periods.

Lieselotte van Lindt struck Belgium's third goal in the second half.

The result now leaves the Irish involved in a relegation battle with the likes of Italy and Azerbaijan.

Irish coach Gene Muller could not disguise his disappointment after Sunday's game.

"We did not start strong enough and Belgium fed off our mistakes, we did not have enough confidence," said Muller.

Captain Alex Speers won her 100th Ireland cap in Sunday's match.

Ireland were beaten 3-0 by hosts Germany in their opening game in Monchengladbach on Saturday.

Natascha Keller scored the opening goal for the Germans after just two minutes and Fanny Rinne added the second from a penalty stroke.

Germany scored their third goal from a penalty corner during the second half, Julia Muller getting her name on the scoresheet with nine minutes left.
