Champions Trophy: Defeat by Germany leaves GB sixth

Thilo Stralkowski

Great Britain had to settle for sixth at the Champions Trophy after being beaten 1-0 by Germany in their final match in Auckland.

Britain looked the better team for most of the match but lost out to a Thilo Stralkowski penalty corner five minutes before half-time.

Germany goalkeeper Nicolas Jacobi had earlier saved good efforts from Ashley Jackson and James Tindall.

Australia beat Spain 1-0 in the final for a record fourth Champions Trophy.

The Netherlands beat hosts New Zealand 5-3 to take the bronze medal, while Pakistan beat South Korea 5-2 to finish seventh in the eight-team tournament.

Britain coach Jason Lee said: "We created plenty of chances today but we just couldn't get over the line.

"The Champions Trophy has been a great learning experience for this group of athletes on the road to London 2012."
