Hockey: Reading women beat Leicester to win English title

Reading celebrate

Reading's women gained revenge for last year's final defeat as they beat Leicester on penalty shuffles to become English hockey champions.

Emma Thomas gave Reading the lead on 52 minutes, before Vanessa Hawkins equalised for Leicester with the very last strike of normal time.

Tied at 1-1 after extra-time, Reading's Kate Walsh and Alex Danson held their nerve to give the home side victory.

The Olympic bronze medal winners were the only scorers in the shoot-out.

"It's been an amazing weekend," Thomas told England Hockey.

"After a great performance yesterday we came out today really hoping to coming away with a result, and it's absolutely fantastic to be champions.

"Typically, our games against Leicester lack goals, and this was no exception today, but all credit to Leicester for coming back and forcing the extra-time and shoot-out.

"I think we just had a little bit more grit at the end to finish it off and Sarah Ellis was brilliant in goal."
