India won their first Asian Games hockey gold in 16 years after beating rivals Pakistan on penalties in Incheon, South Korea.

The contest ended 1-1 after regulation time but Parattu Sreejesh saved two of Pakistan's four efforts as the shootout ended 4-2 in favour of the Indians.

It was a first Asian Games gold for India since 1998 and secures their place in the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

Around 4000 fans watched the first final between the nations in 32 years.

"This is a special moment for Indian hockey," said the country's Australian coach Terry Walsh. "Most of the guys had not played a big final for a long time so I am very happy for them to have accomplished the task."

Defeat extends a miserable run for Pakistan, who failed to qualify for this year's World Cup and now face a tough task in qualifying for Rio.

South Korea won the bronze medal with a 3-2 win over Malaysia.
