Georgie Twigg missed a late penalty stroke for England as they drew 1-1 against Germany in their second match in the Champions Trophy in Argentina.

Danny Kerry's side were awarded the stroke with two and a half minutes remaining of a tight encounter, much to the anger of the Germans.

But German goalkeeper Kristina Reynolds rescued her side, blocking Twigg's shot with her left leg.

Kristina Hillman had given Germany the lead before Ellie Watton equalised.

Hillman got the opening goal of the match in Mendoza on 22 minutes after she applied the final touch to Katharina Otte's shot.

England, who were without captain Alex Danson after she was taken to hospital during Saturday's defeat by Australia, battled hard against the European champions.

In the third quarter, with Germany's Franzisca Hauke and Lisa Altenberg both sin-binned, England pushed forward and on 40 minutes, Watton, who also scored against the Australia, saw her effort deflected in by Hannah Gablac.

England continued to look dangerous with Lily Owsley, Susie Gilbert and Joie Leigh all testing Reynolds, but the German was up to the task and then stopped Twigg's penalty before Giselle Ansley went narrowly wide with a late effort.

England's next game is against hosts Argentina on Tuesday.

"We had lots of good chances in the first half but then we had a player sin-binned and conceded a goal," said Kerry.

"We lost our way a bit until half-time. After the break we were strong and came back into the game. I'm proud of how a young group played in the second half."
