Four early goals helped Ireland's men hammer Chile 8-0 in their opening World League round two game in San Diego.

Mitch Darling's early goal was followed by a Conor Harte effort and goals by Alan Sothern and Bruce McCandless put the Irish 4-0 ahead by the 15th minute.

Darling's second goal made it 5-0 before half-time with Stephen Dowds hitting the sixth just after half-time.

Mikey Watt notched the seventh and Darling completed his hat-trick seven minutes from time.

Chile were denied a consolation goal on the final hooter with a shot that ricocheted off the bar.

The win gave Ireland a strong start to the campaign but they will expect a much tougher tie against Austria on Sunday evening (23:15 GMT).

Italy are next for the Irish on 3 March with the quarter-finals down to take place two days later.

The semi-finals and finals take place on 7 and 8 March.

Ireland will be the second highest ranked team in the competition and need to finish in the top three to progress to World League 3.
