Guernsey race meeting cancellation defended by steward

Continuing the L'Ancresse race meeting on Monday would have posed a danger to jockeys, horses and the public, says senior steward Mike Torode.

The event was cancelled after the course vet David Jeffery advised the stewards that conditions were unsafe.

However, there have since been calls for an inquiry amidst criticism that the event was called off too early.

Torode said: "We have absolutely no worries about an inquiry because our decision was the right decision."

He added: "Had we allowed racing to continue in light of the advice that we'd got and something had happened, we would have been in real trouble and so would the Guernsey Race Club."
