Trainer Paul Green is looking for potential at Haydock
The glittering prizes on offer at Royal Ascot this week continue to capture the headlines in the racing world, but there is also some terrific action taking place away from the famous Berkshire track.
This weekend, Haydock Park boasts an interesting six-race evening card.
The St Helens track is one of the top dual purpose courses in the country with racing in the heights of summer as well as national hunt action in winter.
Merseyside trainer Paul Green works out of the Oaklea stables in Lydiate, midway between Aintree racecourse and the Southport sands on which Red Rum used to gallop.
He has a number of decent entries for Saturday night, and believes all his runners should benefit from the experience.
"We have two nice unraced two-year-olds in the five furlong Angel Maiden stakes, MJ Woodward and Punto Lara Lady," Green told BBC Radio Merseyside.
"They'll both come on a ton from the run and from an experience point of view, it's a local track so they don't have to travel too far, so Haydock Park is a nice place to introduce them.
"We have two in the mile race, Invincible Force, who's been a stable star having won nine times, but he's been slow to come to hand, but he wants soft ground.
"I don't think we'll get that this weekend but he'll be fitter for the run. We also run Feeling Fresh in the same race and he again wants a bit of juice in the ground.
"Our weather is so unpredictable, we get sporadic heavy rain and the going can change quite quickly. But if you're not entered for the races you can get caught out."
Green is happy with the way the campaign has gone so far. He is targeting 20 winners this season and already has six - at this stage last year he was winless.
"I've got a bit more ammunition this year and I know I have horses that will win races," Green continued.
"Lucky Numbers will definitely win over five or six furlongs when we get soft going. The same applies for Feeling Fresh over six or seven furlongs on soft ground.
"Haydock is a fantastic venue and after racing on Saturday night there's the added attraction of Tom Jones - so everyone's looking forward to it."
