Alhellal held on to beat Rattan in the Ulster Derby at Down Royal on Saturday.

The 7-1 shot, trained by Maurice Phelan in Co Kildare and ridden by Declan McDonogh, was under pressure in the closing stages.

But the six-year-old proved the strongest in testing conditions.

Joint favourites Royal Diamond and the Aidan O'Brien-trained Thomasgainsborough took third and fourth places at odds of 9-2.

"This is wonderful. The ground was a big worry but he handled it today," said Phelan who has only three horses in training.

"Declan had ridden him before and knew he was tough and would stay."
