Jockey Mania receives hero's welcome

Grand National-winning jockey Ryan Mania has been released from hospital after an MRI scan on his back and neck revealed just minor injuries.

Mania, 23, who won Saturday's National on 66-1 shot Auroras Encore, fell during a race at Hexham on Sunday.

He spent two nights in hospital but no serious damage has been found and he hopes to return to the saddle soon.

He tweeted:external-link "Delighted to be getting out today. Looking forward to getting home to see friends and family."

Mania fell at the fourth flight of the St John Lee Handicap Hurdle when riding Stagecoach Jasper.

The Scot appeared to suffer a heavy kick between his shoulder blades after his horse fell, and was treated for more than 30 minutes at the track before being airlifted to Newcastle Hospital.

He was conscious as he was put into the air ambulance on a spinal board, but his injuries were initially described as 'severe/serious'.

However, Mania's agent Bruce Jeffrey is hopeful the jockey will make a swift return to racing.

"Ryan had his MRI scan this morning," said Jeffrey. "The scan has shown up a very small fracture in his C7 vertebra and there is also some soft tissue and ligament damage.

"But Ryan feels fine in himself and he is up and walking about perfectly fine. He is hoping to be back in the saddle in the very near future.

"Once again, Ryan and his family would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody for their support, it has been fantastic and he just can't wait to get back riding again."

A homecoming party is being held in his honour in his hometown of Galashiels, Scotland, on Tuesday evening.

    @9 if you know about equine welfare you'll know that those injuries that can be treated, are treated, even if it means not racing again. Those that cannot result in humane euthanasia - mainly significant breaks because a horse is not able to stay still like you or I and infections are rife You'll also know that this happens far more in paddocks and stables to all horses/ponies than on racecourses

    @4 The horse is fine and looking forward to his next outing at Hexham or wherever the Smith's decide to send him next.
    Agreed @5 and to think what he could earn in riding fees and win percentages in one year,many of the football prima-donnas earn in one week !!

    It is fairly typical for a Scotsman to spend a couple of nights in hospital after a celebratory night out

    That's why we have 2nd January as a holiday.

    Jockeys like Ryan are true sportsmen. He is due to be back riding this weekend - incredible. If this was a footballer he'd be out for six months.

    @28 They could have one "race" on the card like that as a gimmick and to prove a point that horses do love to race...however,we cannot deny the livelihoods of the countless male and female jockeys riding today, and ,future jockeys also..we need to decrease unemployment in the UK...not increase it ! You follow ?

    @26 You can not be serious .....a la John McEnroe !

    I have already suggested that they could try the greyhound route in horse-racing without the jockeys... so no whips are involved and perhaps the horses could chase a stuffed fox instead !

    If only Monty Python was on again now ..eh ?

    Yes..a relief all round ..now the question is which way will Ryans' career turn...will he go on to more glory with more years ahead of him than behind him,or will he be remembered as a one-hit wonder jockey as the likes of fellow National winning jockeys John Buckingham,Ben De Haan,Jason Titley,Liam Treadwell etc

    Thank God you're OK Ryan. After JT's horrific injury, I was so worried that the same kind of thing had happened to you.

    Some silly comments here. As has been mentioned, there is extensive veterinary support for horses at meets. These animals are not cheap and every effort is made to save the injured ones.

    And let's face it, if it wasn't for racing half of those horses would be on a restaurant table in France or the freezer compartment of Tescos.

    Indeed he did ,Jo....and Treacle was an honourable 2nd in the Grand National minus his jockey also,whilst countless horses have completed the entire Grand National course ,even long before it was modified, without their jockeys intact !

    So we don't need to have a race without jockeys after all !

    It was an amusing idea,however... a chase after a stuffed fox !

    Interesting analysis @24...however,despite some of the smaller tracks trying to survive,the major tracks,which have regular sponsorship, will continue to thrive, and, attendances certainly haven't been dwindling there,whilst the juggernauts of Godolphin,Coolmore,Emirates,RyanAir etc etc will continue to put money into the Sport to remain competitive.

    @32 I remember all those horses you mention and exciting times then...just a pity we lost 2 of the truly great stars in Killiney and Golden Cygnet...though we are living in another great era with Sprinter Sacre,Simonsig and Bobs Worth all unbeaten this season !

    Amusing how the horse is fine and looking forward to his next outing, yeah was last seen relaxing in the garden talking over how it was a bit shook up but he now fine and raring to go. statement was " yeah im tip top, I survived the mania and ready to get back at it". Oh hang on the horse can't speak so how do we know its looking forward? Utter drivel, is that why some try running with broken legs

    @30 so a horse with no jockey actually out ran the rest of the field? Almost proves they perform better without a jockey to slow them down ;-) and no jockey = no whip so a race horse is more than capable of running the distance and didnt need taps to improve performance. Less weight means less stress on the horses delicate legs and so reduces chance of stress related fractures and injury.

    Yes I follow Andrew, after all these are intelligent guys and girls so finding a job shouldn't be that much of an issue. I wasn't talking about making them all unemployed anyway , a no jockey race would never be allowed by the race lover so as I said it would never happen.

    @14 The Grand National has been with us since 1839 and the Derby since 1780,and, neither will be disappearing anytime soon so stop scare-mongering.

    @22 Horse Racing has always been known as The Sport Of Kings and only football has a larger following as a Sport,and, there is betting involved in football also,as there is in almost every Sport nowadays !
