Trainer Roger Varian believes Kingston Hill is ready to justify favouritism in the St Leger at Doncaster on Saturday.

Varian said his Derby runner-up could bounce back from finishing fourth in the Eclipse Stakes at Sandown.

Kingston Hill was taken out of the Irish Derby and the Great Voltigeur Stakes at York due to the fast going.

"It's not that he has to have it soft. It's just that we want to run on some ground perhaps more in our favour than others," said Varian.

Kingston Hill completed an unbeaten three-race juvenile campaign by winning the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster in October 2013.

But he has yet to win this season, finishing eighth in the 2,000 Guineas before his fine Derby second to Australia at Epsom.

"We'd look back on the Guineas and say he was never going to be a miler. Without doubt, he's a middle-distance horse," Varian told BBC Radio 5 live.

"The Derby was a great run but we were second best on the day and there's no excuses. The winner is a true champion and getting as close to him as we did is true credit to our horse.

"The Eclipse is perhaps where we didn't get the rub of the green. I thought it was a funny sort of a race.

"We're not making excuses for the horse - he's got to deliver in top company on whatever ground. Good horses do that. I feel he's going to come good and this is his time of year."
