Hurricane Fly was thwarted in his quest for a hat-trick of Champion Hurdles as he finished a distant sixth in the French race in Auteuil.
Under Ruby Walsh, the Willie Mullins-trained 11-year-old was bidding to become the first horse to win the English, Irish and French races.
He was also seeking to extend his world record of Grade One victories to 23.
But Un Temps Pour Tout made all the running under James Reveley to win from another Mullins horse, Thousand Stars.
As the David Pipe-trained six-year-old Un Temps Pour Tout enjoyed the run of the race from the front, the grey Thousand Stars stayed on well from the rear to claim the runner-up spot.
Sam Twiston-Davies steered Zarkandar into third place for trainer Paul Nicholls.
