Belfast Giants right wing Gareth Roberts has signed his first professional contract.

The 25-year-old, who made his debut for the Elite League club in December, has agreed a deal for the 2011 season.

Giants coach Doug Christiansen believes the Belfast-born Roberts has a bright future.

"Gareth is the best young player in Belfast and we are thrilled to have him. I am a firm believer in developing young players," said Christiansen.

"He is a great kid and wants to be a great hockey player. I am looking forward to working with him this year."

Roberts came through the ranks with the Junior Giants and then the Castlereagh Spartans club.

He scored his first goal for the Giants in March, winning the man of the match award in a game against the Edinburgh Capitals.
