But David Clarke gave champions Nottingham the lead in the Challenge Cup clash at the Cardiff Bay Arena.
Tim Burrows levelled for Cardiff after Craig Kowalski parried Ben Davies' shot before Jeff Pierce edged them ahead.
Late strikes by Scott Dobben and Pierce's second, a superb solo effort, secured the Devils a hard-fought win.
