George Awada returns to Belfast Giants
Former Belfast Giants captain George Awada has come out of retirement to make a dramatic return to the Odyssey.
The 36-year-old, who has signed a temporary contract as an import player, will make his comeback against the Fife Flyers at the Odyssey on Friday night.
It will be his first Giants game since the 2010 Playoff Championship win.
Awada is back living in Northern Ireland and he was contacted last week by coach Doug Christiansen to see if he was willing to return to the ice.
Early season injuries to current Giants captain Jeremy Rebek and forward Jon Pelle left the Giants with an open spot for an import player and Awada was asked to fill the place on a temporary basis.
"George has been one of the most influential players in Giants history. He adds size to our lineup but more important, he adds experience," said Christiansen.
"He has a different role now than he did in previous years but he has accepted it as a true professional and he will help us win games. I hope the Giants fans welcome him back with a thunderous ovation."
