Fife Flyers suffer Edinburgh Capitals punishment
Edinburgh Capitals finally ended their 39-game winless streak in the best possible fashion as they thrashed local Elite League rivals Fife Flyers 8-3.
The victory ended a run that had gone back to December 2010.
The Murrayfield side took two huge Challenge Cup points in a one-sided match that had their long-suffering fans smiling for once.
Tomas Valecko opened the scoring for the home side with a wonderful flick shot, beating netminder Blair Daly.
Rene Jarolin added a second just before the first interval then swept home number three before Matt Siddall pulled one back for the Flyers.
Jarolin completed his hat-trick just before the end of the second before Flyers' Steven Gunn received a game misconduct penalty for his shameful high stick on Martin Petrina's face.
The goals kept on coming from then on in, with Tomas Valecko adding his second and Edinburgh's fifth before skipper Jan Safar and Marcis Zembergs weighed with a goal apiece.
Mike Hamilton pulled another back for the sorry Flyers, but Bari McKenzie scored the Capitals' eighth, with Siddall scoring again to give the scoreline hollow respectability.
Caps player-coach Richard Hartmann said afterwards: "It was one of those games where everything seemed to go right for us and I am proud of my players.
"We've had games where we had many chances but failed to score them, but this game was different and I'm pleased for the fans."
Fife coach Todd Dutiaume said: "I can accept guys maybe not being good enough for this league, but not looking like you care for 60 minutes is difficult to swallow."
