Belfast Giants defeated Elite League title rivals Nottingham Panthers in a penalty shoot-out after Saturday night's game in England ended 3-3.
Jon Pelle and Paul Deniset put the Giants 2-0 ahead before Matt Francis pulled one back for the hosts.
Robert Dowd added a third for Belfast but Francis scored before David-Alexandre Beauregard levelled 12 minutes into the third period.
Belfast won the shoot-out and the sides meet again in Nottingham on Sunday.
